Trend Alert - The plaid shirt

Plaid, check, tartan...No matter how you call it, this shirt is not a trend but a fashion eternity. An all time classic piece that every woman should have in her closet.
Some people may connect it with lumberjacks and '90s grunge rock music, but I am going to show you many ways to style it for different occasions so that you can make looks that stand out.

Lets start with some basics. Jeans and pants, skinny or loose matched with sneakers, biker boots or pumps depending on where you are going. You can wear anything you can imagine on top of it. A leather perfecto jacket for classic rock outfits or even a wool cape can make you look fashionable and can take you from day to night.

Match your plaid shirt with skirts and look feminine and cool at once. My favorite types of skirts would be ripped jean skirts and leather pencil or pleated skirts. Style it with statement necklaces and killer high heel sandals and you will make many heads turn.

Create layers with sweaters and vests for your morning looks...

Or just wear it around your waist...Looks so cool with a bomber jacket.

Who said that you can't match it with more plaid? There are no rules. Use different colors and patterns and style your shirt with a plaid jacket or skirt and create a very bold outfit. Also match it with a very formal skirt in order to look effortless and chic.

No matter what your style is, there is one shirt for you out there. Here are some of my favorites.

What to Wear - 20131030

The first use of the word grunge was used to describe the Seattle sound that emerged during the mid-1980s. The grunge musicians were noted for their unkempt appearances and rejection of theatrics. “Grunge is nothing more than the way we dress when we have no money” the designer Jean Paul Gaultier told Vogue in 1993. As Gaultier observed, grunge style was largely born of necessity and it was functional, too (flannels for warmth, boots to keep out the wet). It is a representation of nihilism that had been evolving among members of the college-rock and hardcore underground for more a decade but was only just beginning to meet the commercial mainstream via MTV.
“Punk was antifashion” James Truman, then editor in chief of Details, said. “It made a statement. Grunge is about not making a statement, which is why it’s crazy for it to become a fashion statement.”
Marc Jacobs, the prime mover of the trend, described his infamous grunge collection, which eventually cost him his job at Perry Ellis, to the Times as a “hippied romantic version of punk.”
In 2013, Saint Laurent dresses his grunge woman like a bas-ass schoolgirl who wears plaid dresses, heavy studs and embellishments. Keep it rebellious with fishnet tights and biker boots.
A trend for all of us who grew up listening to the heavily distorted electric guitar sound of Sonic Youth, Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

What To Wear - 20130929

Plaid in every color and shape was on the runways for Fall/Winter 2013 and is going to be in the closet of every fashionista too. How can we transform the trend to match our personal aesthetic? I mean, we all have a plaid shirt and we know how to wear it. Or we may also have a Scottish tartan kilt and go for a grunge look like those on Saint Laurent's catwalk. But this time we also have examples like those on Celine's show that suggest to match different plaid patterns and colors in one look. How do we pull that off without making it look too costumy?
If you have the impeccable style of Christine Centenera I say go for it. Personally I love it. I only recommend you mix different types of plaid (be very very careful) or else the result will be too matchy-matchy.
If you want to play it safe, try it in smaller doses and you won't fail. You could chose one oversized plaid coat, like those of Stella McCartney and make every simple outfit stand out. You could also try a plaid dress which goes with pretty much everything. Try it with pumps, ankle boots or even over the knee boots. Keep the colors of your accessories in the same color pallette of your dress and use a light make up. Done!
